The Entourage Effect

No, I’m not talking about my encounter with the famous posse… but I am talking about hemp.

What exactly is the Entourage Effect?

The short definition is basically the image above.

The long definition, well… it’s more complicated than just a kumbaya.

If you’re new to phytocannabinoids (often referred to as CBD…but so much more), you might be wondering, “What the hemp is the difference between CBD and Full Spectrum Phytocannabinoids”? Or, if you’re like me, you might not have even noticed there was a difference at all.

Before I really knew the difference and felt the Entourage Effect… I would just search for the prettiest “CBD” package and call it a day. After many months of searching for a product that consistently worked best for me, this term “full-spectrum” really started to stick. I realized that, for me, full-spectrum or whole plant products gave me more functional and holistic benefits in what I was searching for in my phytocannabinoid. Now, I am not a scientist but there are a few interesting terms that stuck out when I was focusing on what exactly I was feeding my body on a daily basis.

The hemp plant contains over 500 different plant compounds that are broken down into 3 main categories that define full-spectrum.

  • Phytocannabinoids: There are roughly 100 phytocannabinoids (CBD is just one of these) in the hemp plant and they all work through the body’s endocannabinoid system to regulate stress, calmness, pain tolerance, and relief from inflammation
  • Terpenes:have a beneficial effect on stress and inflammation
  • Flavonoids:present anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anti-fungal effects.

Each of these plant compounds provide similar health benefits from the spectrum of phytocompounds that the hemp plant provides.

Full-spectrum is just that – the entire spectrum of phytocompounds. Now this was crazy to me because of course I encountered more holistic benefits from full-spectrum because there are hundreds of different compounds working together, as opposed to just CBD by itself (AKA CBD Isolate).

Oh! And guess what? There is a term for all of this. It’s called… the ‘Entourage Effect’. In other words, the Entourage Effect is the full-bodied experience that occurs when these beneficial compounds work synergistically to magnify the range of intended effects – as opposed to just one or two of these compounds working in isolation. So basically, the image above!

So next time you are looking for your pretty CBD packaging, remember to buy the full spectrum clinical dose that gives you the Entourage Effect.
